The u3a Snooker Group is being set up in co-operation with the Snooker Club based at the Princes Risborough Literary Institute (PRLI) building at 37 High Street, Princes Risborough. This agreement provides an opportunity for u3a members to play snooker on a pay-as-you-play basis each week. Every Tuesday evening is reserved for our use, with two sessions of play, comprising 4 players maximum for each session.
The first session will start at around 6.45pm with two teams of two, i.e. four players. It is a ‘short’, timed session, lasting just one hour. The team with the highest score when the hour is up will win the game. This will appeal to those who prefer to play for a limited, fixed time.
The second session, also with two teams of two, will follow quickly after the first, but is not fixed and will end when the winners score cannot be beaten by their opponents. Such a game can last up to 90 minutes plus, which means that it is likely to end around 8.30pm and may be longer.
From time to time there may be a group ‘coaching’ session provided during a 15 minute interval after the end of the first session, therefore allowing 8 members (first and second sessions combined) some useful guidance.
Equipment in the form of snooker cues can be provided, although those who want to take the game more seriously may decide to purchase their own cues.
Because we are limited to 8 players each Tuesday we will give priority slots to those excluded from playing in week 1 so that they can play in week 2. At this stage it is difficult to gauge week-on-week demand. However all players must first register with the U3A Snooker Group Leader.
Costs are very reasonable. There is a standard fee of £1 per participant plus £1 per hour towards table lighting costs. First session costs are therefore £1 + £1 = £2 each. Second session costs are £1 + £2 = £3 each.
All applications to join the group should be made to Richard Onion snooker@risboroughu3a.org.uk who will be glad to discuss questions.
