It was a beautiful, sunny day as we left PR on ‘pinch and a punch’ day a little later than planned after encountering a maintenance lorry blocking our way but we arrived at Wimpole Hall dead on 11am.
It was a large site, although a buggy was available to those who were unable to walk to the walled kitchen garden. This was immaculate although a little early for many crops to be in the ground. The cherry trees were in flower. However,our time here was limited as we had to move on to the CUBG.
In contrast to the formality of the Wimpole Estate these gardens were informally planted with a lovely rock garden, stone clapper bridge, large pool and weeping willow . There was a large collection of trees, many in flower, with people enjoying the sunshine under a large cherry on the main lawn. The Hogbean Hornbeam was a delight in full catkin. The glasshouses were set for different temperature zones ranging from dry arid to hot tropical and in a relatively small area there was a great array of exotic planting.
A lovely, relaxing garden perfect for a two hour visit. We arrived safely back at PR just before 6pm. (Carole Barfoot)
