After a trouble-free journey avoiding the M25, we arrived at NT Winkworth Arboretum on a dry but cloudy morning. Winkworth is the only arboretum owned by the National Trust and it is undergoing large scale development of its visitor centre facilities. The trees were magnificent with russets, reds and yellows dominating the scene. Some hilly paths and wet areas but also broad walks round the lake, which could be enjoyed by most and the reflections in the water were stunning. The tea shop sold drinks and snacks and we were able to sit outside with some seating under cover. After a 2-hour visit we boarded the coach and in about 30 minutes arrived at RHS Wisley. As always, Wisley didn’t fail to please. The gardens looked beautiful, full of superb leaf colour and spectacular displays of nerines, dahlias, grasses, Echinaceas and many other Autumn-flowering plants. The recent mild weather had meant that many late Summer plants were still flowering adding to the colour in the borders. Good food in the restaurants and retail therapy in the plant centre and gift shop were enjoyed before we journeyed home. A great day visiting two lovely places.
