Eight of us met to discussTess Gerritsen’s book ‘Keeping the dead’. This features Detective Jane Rizzoli and Medical Examiner Maura Isles. The story draws on the author’s first degree in Anthropology as well as her subsequent training as a Doctor and revolves around the finding of what seem to be an Egyptian Mummy and then a bog body at a museum. Investigations to prove the age of the artefacts reveals that all is not as it seems and someone is out for revenge.
We thought that the book was well crafted and researched but the details were too gruesome for some members. We also felt that the introduction of another character late on the story was more about enabling the author to wrap up the story and that this was a bit of a cop out. On the whole we liked the book and gave it a rating of 7.2/10.
As we were discussing the book a couple of author recommendations came up: C. J Sampson for his Tudor murder mysteries and P. D. James. A couple of websites, Abe Books and World of Books, were mentioned as good sources of second hand books at reasonable prices.
