September 1st 2021 Long Walk led by John Stallwood
Ten of us met at the Blue Ball pub at Asheridge near Chesham for the start of a 7 ½ mile walk. We set off at 9.30 to explore the ridges around Chesham first going north towards Hawridge then circling around west and southwards to Chartridge then on back to Asheridge. We walked along paths new to many of us with lovely views over the surrounding countryside.
There were some hills mostly not too steep apart from the final one leading us back up to Asheridge, but by then the pub was in sight so everyone was very happy! A table had been reserved for us and the extremely reasonably priced food was quickly served. A lovely walk in an area not so well known to the group – and what a lovely pub!

Meeting place – The Shoulder of Mutton
I didn’t lose a walker – I actually gained a walker! After counting my group of 9, we set off 5 minutes early to be caught up by a new member, Janet, and we became 10! Down Wendover main street, through the archway of the Red Lion Pub and towards the Church but turning left at the tiny bridge towards The Hale. Climb to the top of the hill and left into Wendover Woods. Long, steady climb through the woods to the highest point of the Chilterns and a welcome coffee at the Coffee Shop. If it hadn’t been raining the views along the way would have been lovely! Left past the car park and downhill towards Halton House, once owned by Alfred Freiherr de Rothschild in 1880 but now the main Officers’ mess for RAF Halton. Past extensive playing fields with excellent views beyond. Right turn towards the churchyard and Halton Village. Walk through the village and then left onto the canal path following this back into Wendover. The canal is rich in all sorts of waterfowl – moorhens, coots, Canada geese, swans, egrets and herons.
September 13th Stroll led by Janet Griffin
Thirteen of us met in Monks Risborough – a record number since the pandemic – though sadly, one lady had to withdraw as she had forgotten to take some medication and didn’t feel she could complete the walk. We walked up to Whiteleaf village, over the golf course and on to Cadsden, From here we took the winding valley path, a long though gentle uphill, stopping at the end for a breather. We then turned left to reach and cross the Cadsden road to continue on a bridleway giving lovely views over where we had come from. Later we turned left to go downhill back towards Cadsden then taking a different roue across the golf course and on back to Whiteleaf and Monks Risborough. A fairly strenuous 3 ½ mile stroll but everyone managed and enjoyed it.
