What a lovely evening we had at The Plant Specialist Nursery in Great Missenden on September 15th. Most of us were familiar with the nursery, but a few members had never visited before and were delighted at “finding” it. We arrived at about 5.00pm and wandered around the garden before gathering to listen to a wonderful talk by Sean Walter, one of the directors. He told us about how the nursery was founded, its history and how over the years, it had expanded from 1.5 acres to 4.5 acres. He explained the aims of the nursery in growing old and new varieties of herbaceous plants to suit all types of growing conditions and in particular local ones. We then went for a fascinating walk around the stock beds and growing areas which most of us had never visited as they were not normally open to the public. All the plants sold in the nursery were grown on site and spend most of the time outside so that they will be hardy and resilient enough to grow well in people’s gardens. Sean kept us all interested by explaining the difficulties and delights of being a nurseryman and willingly gave answers to our questions. Eventually, we returned to the plant sales area and many of us bought plants. After light refreshments and thanking Sean and his “ladies” for hosting us so warmly and entertainingly, we drove away in our cars with some beautiful plants and memories of a super evening visit.
