Our January meeting was attended by 63 members which was marvellous.  We were treated to a superb talk by Professor Sandy Primrose on ‘The Language of Flowers’.  With a wonderful presentation of slides and illustrations, Sandy told us about the confusion of common names and the reason for Latin names and how plants communicated via scent and colour to attract pollinators.  Finally, he talked about how plants interacted with humans, including the effect of scents given off by plants such as lavender and how perfume manufacturers use these plant substances in their very expensive products.  It was an absorbing, wide-ranging talk filled with anecdotes and humour and I’m sure we will be asking Sandy to return next year to give another of his fantastic talks.
