Photography March meeting

The subject for prints was “Water”. Again I was amazed by the quality and variety of prints. And the inventiveness – with someone thinking that bubbles of air constitute water: obviously fame has gone to their head.

We agreed that the April photo-shoot would be at Hambleden, providing opportunities to photograph the river and lock as well as the nearby bluebell fields (which Peter has guaranteed will be in full bloom). I’ll send out full details in early April, but in the meantime please let Bernard know if:

• you will be driving and can offer lifts (and how many people you could take)
• if you would like a lift

Peter showed a gadget which could be used to remotely trigger a separate flashgun from the flash of a flashgun built in to the camera. The advantages of this are:

• You can augment the power of the built-in flash with an external, more powerful flash gun
• You can do this without needing any kind of physical connection between the camera and the external flashgun
• You can have the external flashgun situated some distance away from the camera to provide more interesting lighting and avoid issues like red-eye
• You can use vintage flashguns (like the Mecablitz that Peter used), even if you do have physical connectors for external flashguns on the camera. Old-flashguns from the days of film should not be used on digital cameras because the high voltages they put across the physical connection can harm a modern digital camera, but using a remote triggering device avoids this danger.
