What a glorious day! The weather was perfect, although rather warm being the hottest day so far in the year, the gardens were beautiful and the house was very interesting. Coughton Court has been the home of the Throckmorton family for over 600 years. This famous Catholic family holds a place in English history for its roles in both the Throckmorton Plot to murder Queen Elizabeth in 1583, and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The award-winning gardens at Coughton Court today were planted by the current incumbent Christina Williams, who studied at The English Gardening School and it was chosen as ‘The English Garden of the Week’ by an international magazine/website in 2019. The walled garden was fabulous consisting of a wonderful rose labyrinth with an informal mixture of roses (old and modern), shrubs, climbers and perennials, herbaceous borders of hot reds/yellows and cool blues and pinks, and smaller rooms with restful plantings. Areas where we could also ramble were the kitchen garden, orchards, a bog garden, ponds and woodland walks. A really great day – lovely gardens, perfect weather and good company.
