It was a damp, cold and windy morning when we set out on our trip to NT Hidcote and Kiftsgate Gardens. But as we crossed the Cotswolds, we were rewarded with sunny spells and wonderful views. We arrived at Hidcote and spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon exploring these famous gardens. Blue, yellow and white were the dominant colours together with the luminous green of new leaves and groups of colourful tulips. The individual gardens and borders were stunning with Spring flowers and blossom as was the more informal streamside. Bird song and the buzzing of bees were everywhere and being sheltered from the cold wind, many people could be seen in cosy corners basking in the Spring sunshine. We were also fortunate to be able to visit an exhibition of the most beautiful embroidered art made with plants from the garden. After lunch we boarded the coach to take us the very short distance to Kiftsgate. A wonderful private garden, created by three generations of women on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment. The upper more formal gardens near to the house were full of early flowering plants and the tree peonies, and azaleas were superb. Those who managed the descent to the lower garden were treated to the idyllic pastoral view across the Vale of Evesham and the peace and tranquillity of this magical part of the gardens. Unusual plants on the plant stall were bought by some members and most people indulged in tea and cake in the tearoom before the lovely, sunny return trip over the Cotswolds.
