We welcomed a new member to our merry band and had a wide ranging discussion about the book. The story relates to the aftermath of the war and the coincidence of our meeting being the day after the 80th Anniversary of D-Day did not escape our notice. A main theme of the book is the impact of the war after it ended. This is shown from various angles via the characters and their individual stories and in many instances focusses on how people found themselves doing things they could never have imagined themselves doing before the war.

No spoilers but the twist towards the end was unexpected for some of us. There was a feeling that some threads were unnecessary to the story or were left hanging at the end of the book, such as how Crista came to work for the British.

We all thought the book was generally well written and enjoyed reading it. We gave it 8/10.
