The book tells the true story of an amazing operation during World War II to fool the Germans. This audacious plan used the body of a dead man disguised as a soldier carrying sensitive letters to the heads of command in North Africa. The deception was successful and fooled Hitler into diverting troops away from Sicily to allow the allies to recapture the island and minimise loss of life.
The group felt that the book was very detailed, perhaps too detailed at times so we gave it 8/10. This said, we were amazed by the inner workings of espionage. The group of people involved in executing the plot were highly intelligent, bold and courageous. The submarine captain and his crew seemed to be utterly fearless in this operation and others they carried out during the war.
Against all the odds the seemingly crazy plot worked, saved many lives and helped the Allies to push the German army out of Italy and ultimately win World War II. We felt that this was an important story that needed to be preserved for prosperity and reminded us of the great debt we all owe to these brave men and to wear our poppies with pride.
