Another great turn out (64 members) for our meeting in the Bowls Club to hear Avril Hughes give her talk ‘A brighter side of Winter – creating a winter garden’. Avril started her career as a fashion designer and after pursuing a number of different careers, followed in her father’s footsteps and became a plants expert and gardener. Her talk gave a fascinating insight into the design and planting of her own beautifully-designed, small garden in Islip and the many plants that make a garden look stunning in the winter months. Plants with wonderful coloured and scented flowers, standout foliage, berries and structure and trees whose barks shine in the winter sun. Having over 160 varieties of snowdrops in her garden, Avril is a devoted galanthophile visiting snow drop sales throughout the country. A lovely talk peppered with very helpful hints and humorous anecdotes.
