Eight of us met to discuss Rosamund Lupton’s book Three Hours. The story is about a siege at a school in Somerset. The siege only lasts for three hours but for those involved this feels like eternity. The book is well planned with no padding. The story is gripping, topical, very well constructed and thought provoking.
The author provides a couple of unexpected plot devices via the drama teacher’s interpretation of Macbeth, which is due to be performed by the children that evening, and by making the attackers white supremisists. She drip feeds information as the story progresses and there are red herrings and plot twists and turns a plenty. We were impressed with how the author created and wrote the story, as you read it feels like the layers of an onion being peeled away to reveal the real motive at the centre. No spoilers but there are a couple points that make you pull up short as the truth of the situation hits you.
We felt this was the book we liked most out of those we’ve read and we gave it a marking of 8.8/10. Three Hours is the Author’s fourth book and some of us will be reading more by her for sure.
